After all why should our goal be the reinstatement of an illusory ‘exact’ relationship between events and words? If you probe in the ashes you will never learn anything about the fire: by the time the ashes can be handled the meaning has passed on. Every adventure is a cup so empty it can be drunk from again and again and again. Every adventure is so perfect it verges on silence.
Jeanne Hébuterne met Modigliani when she was nineteen. She soon began an affair with the charismatic artist, and the two fell deeply in love. Before long she moved in with him, despite strong objection from her Catholic parents. Described as gentle, shy, quiet, and delicate, Jeanne became a principal subject for Modigliani’s art.
In the fall of 1918, the couple moved to the French Riviera where their daughter was born. The following spring, they returned to Paris and Jeanne became pregnant again. By this time, Modigliani was suffering from meningitis made worse by complications of substance abuse.
When she was nearly full term with their second child Modigliani died. Jeanne was completely heart broken and committed suicide by walking backwards out of a top floor window. She was only twenty-one years old.
